Research centers and institutes are among the most important ways UCLA encourages collaboration across disciplines. There are hundreds of active centers, institutes and labs, many with ties to other institutions and active community programs. This page highlights a small sampling.

International Institute

UCLA International Institute

UCLA operates with a global approach.

And because international experience is integral to a world-class education, the UCLA International Institute is positioned to foster global perspectives. Featuring 18 multidisciplinary centers that offer public events and lecture series, the institute brings dignitaries, politicians, scholars, artists and activists to campus. The work of hundreds of award-winning UCLA faculty members affiliated with the institute informs news coverage and policy around the world, making UCLA a key player and authority in international teaching and research on global issues.

UCLA Institute of American Cultures

Just as UCLA celebrates diversity across campus, its Institute of American Cultures fosters ethnic studies scholarship and research. The institute is a collaborative initiative among the four ethnic studies centers on campus — the American Indian Studies Center, the Asian American Studies Center, the Ralph J. Bunche Center for African American Studies and the Chicano Studies Research Center.

UCLA Center for 17th- and 18th-Century Studies

Through conferences, lectures, concerts, exhibits and publications, UCLA scholars bring the 17th and 18th centuries — the "early modern" period — into sharp focus. The Clark Library offers the premier collection of Oscar Wilde books and manuscripts, a window on the fin-de-siècle world.

Note: The William Andrews Clark Memorial Library is currently closed for seismic retrofit. During the retrofit, conferences and other events have been relocated to campus.

UCLA Institute of the Environment and Sustainability

With academic degree programs to train the next generation of leaders and eight research centers, the institute generates knowledge and provides solutions for regional and global environmental problems. Research focuses on challenges that include climate change, air and water quality, biodiversity and conservation, energy, coastal and water resources, urban sustainability, corporate sustainability and environmental economics.

The institute also drives interdisciplinary environment and sustainability initiatives on campus, and advises businesses and policymakers.

UCLA Eli & Edythe Broad Center for Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Research

Stem cell research is a revolutionary opportunity to explore and understand the nature and behavior of stem cells and use that knowledge to treat human disease. The Broad Stem Cell Research Center is on the cusp of transforming patient care by developing personalized stem-cell-based therapies.

Currently, clinical trials focus on "bubble baby" syndrome (SCID, severe combined immunodeficiency) and sickle cell disease.
